Spelinspektionen Can Intervene in "Excessive" Online Gambling Cases

Sweden's gaming regulator Spelinspektionen revealed this week that it has been given the power to intervene in excessive online gaming cases by setting requirements for operators on their excessive gambling policies.

The regulator will use the power to help ensure that gaming operators maintain the standards required to protect players and that they're being compliant with their duties related to not allowing punters to bet excessively. The move comes after a study revealed that various operators had wildly different practices for preventing excessive gambling.

Regarding the change, Niklas Wykman, the Minister for Financial Markets in Sweden said: "There must be order in the gaming market. The new requirement should lead to more detailed action plans, making it clear how gambling companies take responsibility for counteracting gambling-related risks. This strengthens Spelinspektionen's ability to prevent people from being impacted by the negative aspects of gambling."
