Las Vegas Sands Gets Nassau County Approval for Casino

This week it was revealed that Nassau County has voted to approve a 42-year lease of the Nassau County Veterans Coliseum grounds to Las Vegas Sands, where the company would build a casino resort if granted approval by the New York Gaming Commission.

The lease was approved with an 18-1 margin and is one of many steps required before construction begins on the project. The Colosseum was formerly the host site of the NHL's New York Islanders and the NBA G-League's Long Island Nets. If built, the resort would occupy less than 10% of the land for its $4 billion development. The resort would have a five-star hotel, live performance venue, casino floor, and shopping area.

The state of New York is looking to award gaming licenses to allow for a downstate casino, and there have been multiple proposals floated from different operators.

It is expected that the Gaming Commission will be awarding gaming licenses next year, but those who apply need to have approvals before they can be formally considered.
