MLB Bans Tucupita Marcano For Life For Betting Violations

Yesterday, Major League Baseball revealed that they've banned San Diego Padres player Tucupita Marcano for life after he was found to have bet on MLB games, including on his own team.

This is the first lifetime ban for an MLB player since Pete Rose was banned from the sport in 1989 when he was serving as a manager. Marcano hasn't played in an MLB game since July of last year and was playing for the Pittsburgh Pirates when he was found to be betting on baseball. He placed 387 total baseball bets, 231 of which were on MLB games. 25 of those wagers were on his team while he was still on the roster, although he didn't play in any of the games he bet on.

Four other baseball players were suspended for terms of up to a year for also betting on baseball while on professional team rosters. These players are Oakland Athletics pitcher Michael Kelly and minor leaguers Jay Groome, Jose Rodriguez, and Andrew Saalfrank.

Regarding the bans, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said: "The strict enforcement of Major League Baseball's rules and policies governing gambling conduct is a critical component of upholding our most important priority: protecting the integrity of our games for the fans. The longstanding prohibition against betting on Major League Baseball games by those in the sport has been a bedrock principle for over a century. We have been clear that the privilege of playing in baseball comes with a responsibility to refrain from engaging in certain types of behaviour that are legal for other people."

No statement from the players was available at press time.

24-years-old and completely boned his career over some bets. Crazy. What a dingleberry.
