Australian Credit Card Ban on Gambling Takes Effect

Australian gamblers can no longer use credit cards to gamble in their home country as a ban on the process came into effect on June 11th.

The ban also extends to other credit products and digital currencies and is part of the Interactive Gambling Amendment (Credit and Other Measures) Bill 2023. The ban relates to all forms of online gambling except for lottery and keno products. Operators who continue to accept credit card transactions will face fines of up to $234,750 AUD.

The government is undertaking the ban to try to combat gambling-related harm in the country. Australian gamblers routinely rank among the biggest losers in the world, and the country has seen over 22,000 people self-exclude on the BetStop exclusion registry since it launched less than a year ago.

Regarding the ban, Minister for Social Services Amanda Rishworth said, "Our government takes seriously our responsibility to prevent and reduce harm from online wagering. Our ban on credit cards will help with this goal. You can't use your credit card to place a bet for land-based gambling. Now the same rules apply for online gambling."

Australian Minister for Communications Michelle Rowland added: "Australians should not be gambling with money they do not have. Last year, the Albanese Labour government committed to banning credit cards for online wagering - and we've delivered.

"This ban builds on the significant progress to minimise gambling harm that the Albanese government has made over the past two years, which is already benefitting thousands of vulnerable Australians.

"Our commitment to ensuring that gambling takes place within a robust legislative framework with strong consumer protections remains steadfast and we will have more to announce in due course."
