NBA Bans Player Over Betting Violations

It has been revealed that the National Basketball Association issued a lifetime ban for Toronto Raptors player Jontay Porter after it was revealed that he violated betting rules in multiple ways.

Porter was found to have provided confidential information about his health to someone that he knew was betting on NBA games. He was also associated with another person who placed an $80,000 prop bet that said Porter would underperform during a March 20th game. If that bet paid out, the gambler would have won $1.1 million. The bet didn't come to fruition, as Porter claimed he felt ill after playing three minutes and sportsbooks froze the wager.

The NBA subsequently looked into Porter and found that he placed 13 bets on games between January and March of this year worth $54,094. He won $76,059 off those wagers, resulting in a net profit of $21,965. He never played in a game that he bet on, although he did place a prop bet that included his team, with Porter betting his team would lose.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver spoke on the ban, noting: "There is nothing more important than protecting the integrity of NBA competition for our fans, our teams and everyone associated with our sport, which is why Jontay Porter's blatant violations of our gaming rules are being met with the most severe punishment.

"While legal sports betting creates transparency that helps identify suspicious or abnormal activity, this matter also raises important issues about the sufficiency of the regulatory framework currently in place, including the types of bets offered on our games and players. Working closely with all relevant stakeholders across the industry, we will continue to work diligently to safeguard our league and game."

Wow, that's pretty brazen. I'm honestly surprised how stupid some of these athletes can be. We're still seeing NFL players suspended for betting violations, and we know the leagues and teams specifically go over betting rules with them.

So dumb.
