Slovakia Reveals 2023 Handle of €21.4 Billion

Slovakia's Office of the Regulation of Gambling has revealed that the country's gamblers placed €21.4 billion in bets during 2023, with punters winning back €20.4 billion.

Online bets were responsible for the vast majority of bets, as 90% of gamblers prefer to play that way for most verticals. Taxes paid to the country during the year were over €301 million, up over €50 million from last year. Online gaming taxes were €93 million, with fixed odds betting terminals generating €80.48 million. Land casino taxes paid were €61.9 million. The tax rates for online casinos and FOBTs is 22%, while land casinos pay 27% on gross gaming revenues.

The regulator noted that land casino revenues will drop moving forward due to tighter restrictions on gambling in certain areas of the country.

The regulator noted that they've been conducting a number of gambling inspections to try to clamp down on illegal gambling operators, both online and in the land-based sector. Notably, the regulator's director general Martin Bohoš said that local governments need to walk a line on clamping down too heavily on betting, as it can push gamblers to illegal markets.

Regarding the possible bans on gambling in some areas, Bohoš said: "I would like this topic to be subject to a wider social discussion, because if someone feels that by banning legal gambling in the territory of a larger city, gambling will be dealt with, yes, legal gambling will be dealt with, but the risks of illegal gambling will remain high."
