Ontario Pauses Betting on WBA Events

This week the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario announced that it has ordered sportsbetting operators in the province to stop taking bets on World Boxing Association matches due to concerns over the group's integrity.

The move is similar in scope to what the AGCO did with the UFC in 2022, although bets resumed after the MMA promotion worked to enhance integrity safeguards.

AGCO said that all operators needed to stop accepting wagers and promoting bets immediately due to the lack of safeguards. The regulator looked into the WBA's events following suspicious betting patterns regarding a fight between Livan Navarro and Yoenis Tellez. Independent monitors noted that there were patterns on bets related to the fight lasting over five-and-a-half rounds. It turned out that the boxing manager of Tellez bet $110,000 on the fight lasting over that time period. Tellez eventually won the match by knockout in round 10.

That investigation caused the banning of bets until the promotion can meet the Registrar's Standards for Internet Gaming. These standards require the WBA to enforce allegations of match-fixing and insider wagering by blocking the athlete, their coaches, managers, handlers, trainers, medical professionals, or other insiders with knowledge of the workings of the event from betting.

Regarding the matter, AGCO CEO Karin Schnarr said: "Ontarians who wish to bet on sporting events need to be confident that those events are fairly run and that clear integrity safeguards are in place and enforced by an effective sport governing body.

"Knowing the popularity of boxing in Ontario, we look forward to reinstating betting on WBA events once appropriate safeguards against possible match-fixing and insider betting have been confirmed."
