The Mississippi Senate's Gaming Committee has voted to approve House Bill 774 this week, beating a deadline to report on bills that originated in the House of Representatives and bringing the legislation one step closer to passing.
The bill would let gamblers 21 years or older gamble on sports via their mobile devices, rather than strictly in land casinos as is currently the case. Operators would have to partner with one of the brick-and-mortar casinos in the state, and each land casino can partner with multiple sportsbetting companies.
Mobile sportsbetting would be taxed at 12% on revenues, with the funds going toward road and bridge repairs.
The Senate will have to vote to approve of the bill by April 11th, which is when the legislative session for the state ends. There were changes to the bill in February, so a return to the House may be necessary if it passes the Senate. If the bill passes both chambers, it would head to the desk of Governor Tate Reeves, who can sign the bill into law or veto the measure.
