Today the UK Gambling Commission announced that they've fined Star Racing Limited (trading as Star Sports) £594,000 for AML and social responsibility failings.

The UK regulator conducted an investigation into the company that found multiple breaches that occurred between March 2020 and May 2021, and saw the company having both bad controls and ineffective policies to combat money laundering or socially irresponsible play. The failings included allowing customers to put in large amounts of money without looking into the source of funds as well as delaying the requests for the information itself.

Social failings included not understanding the import of interacting with customers in order to stop risky betting.

The company was found to have breached licencing conditions Paragraphs 2 and 3, specifically 12.1.1 and 12.1.2, which were related to money laundering policies. Social Responsibility Code Provision 3.4.1 was also breached related to the lack of interaction with players for responsible gaming.

In addition to the fine, the operator had licencing conditions placed upon it, wherein Star Racing will have to conduct risk-based due diligence on the third-party groups. Additional violations could result in more fines or even licence revocation.
