GambleAware Reports Q1 Donations

UK gambling charity has announced its first-quarter donations, revealing that it received £430,813 for the three months ending June 30th, 2023.

The numbers are down 1.1% from last year, and saw £317,099 being pledged for Research, Education, and Treatment by gambling operators in the country. There were £113,714 in non-RET donations that were pledged by operator 888. Those funds come from accounts that are dormant or unclaimed winnings.

GambleAware makes responsible gambling education its mission in the UK, and it currently serves as one of the largest gambling charities in the country. The group seeks 0.1% of Gross Gaming Yield from operators, with groups that have under £250,000 in GGY asked to donate £250. The current Gambling Act review that's underway is seeking to make the donations mandatory.

Other statistics revealed during the period included:

  • Average RET donations of £2,757, down 9% from last year
  • No donations from any of the UK's biggest operators, who normally wait until the end of the fiscal year to make their contributions
  • BetFred donated £50,000, the largest donation received

During the last fiscal year donations came in at £46.5 million, which was up 34% from the year prior.
