A study conducted by the American trade group the American Gaming Association has revealed that 85% of American adults believe the Supreme Court made the correct decision to overturn PASPA, which paved the way for legal sportsbetting in the United States.
The study asked for opinions on the court ruling, which overturned the law and optioned sportsbetting legislation to individual states. The support level five years on is much higher than in even 2019, when 63% supported the ruling. 77% of respondents do support sportsbetting legislation within their home state.
For those who participate in the activity, 78% wager through regulated sportsbooks. 77% of online sports wagers are placed through regulated companies, up from 44% in 2019. 44% of those who bet with unlicensed books plan to transition to licensed books within the next year. 90% of active gamblers intend to remain active for at least the next year.
Regarding the results of the survey, AGA CEO Bill Miller said, "American adults have always enjoyed betting on sports, and overwhelmingly value the ability to bring their action into a legal market, close to home.
"The rapid spread of legal sports betting - fuelled by regulated, responsible entities - has contributed to communities and established consumer protections by migrating betting away from the illegal market monopoly that PASPA perpetuated.
"Five years post-PASPA, the AGA and our members continue to support responsibly expanding the legal market while cracking down on predatory illegal operators.
"The regulated industry and our partners across the entire ecosystem - policymakers, law enforcement, regulators, leagues, media, technology providers and more - have made significant strides in our collaborative consumer education efforts since 2018 and we will continue to find new ways to enhance consumer protections as the market matures."
