A survey conducted by research group Ipsos indicated that 85.3% of Ontario gamblers use licensed sites from the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario to conduct their gambling play.
The survey asked 1,850 gamblers aged 19 or older from a period running from February 28th to March 13th, 2023 and asked where the respondents gambled. 85.3% of respondents said that they gambled on a licensed site over the past three months. 14.7% of respondents said that they gambled on illegal sites, and 19.5% said that they've gambled on both legal and illegal sites.
The publishing of the survey comes on the one-year anniversary of Ontario's regulated online gaming market launching, as the activity went live on April 4th, 2022.
Regarding the survey, AGCO CEO Tom Mungham said, "A key objective in this first year has been to move Ontario players from playing on unregulated sites to the regulated market, so that they would benefit from high standards of operator and game integrity, fairness and player protections including responsible gambling safeguards.
"Although there's still much work to be done, we're pleased to see such a substantial shift towards gaming on regulated sites so far, and everything that it represents for players and for the province."
