Gaming brand Betfair has been slapped with a hefty SEK4 million fine by Swedish gaming regulator Spelinspektionen due to offering wagers that were banned under the country's law.
The Flutter Entertainment-owned brand was found to have taken action on youth-level league U21 Allsvenskan, even though the country only lets operators offer wagers on the top four tiers of football. Betfair was found to have offered bets on 148 matches in the league between 2021 and 2022, and 224 customers bet SEK1.1 million on those matches.
Betfair admitted to violating the country's betting laws, but noted that the bets were only available on the company's Exchange service, which pits gamblers against other gamblers. The group has said that they've removed the option to bet on the matches.
In a statement, Spelinspektionen wrote: "Betting on the U21 Allsvenskan is not permitted in order to protect young players from undue influence. Violating these regulations constitutes a serious violation.
"The violation has continued over a long period of time and on repeated occasions. It has been systematically recurring during 2021 and 2022."
