Gambling operator bet365 has been fined by Sweden's gaming regulator Spelinspektionen for player protection failings.
The fine was doled out to the company's regional operator Hillside, and came to a total of SEK79 million ($7.7 million USD). The fine is split between Hillside Sports (SEK65 million) and Hillside Gaming (SEK14 million). The regulator found that the company let punters play without setting deposit limits, and failed to proactively reach out to players who showed problem betting behaviors.
The lapses occurred between October 17th, 2021 and December 17th, 2021 when the regulator audited the operator. There were multiple occurrences that triggered the penalty.
In a statement, Spelinspektionen addressed the fine, noting: "In general, it has taken too long before the two companies took measures to prevent continued risky gambling.
"We also noted that the original action plans lacked a description of what measures should be taken in the event of excessive gambling for young players (18-24 years) and for those who had previously been suspended."
The announcement of the fines comes a day after the regulator announced a SEK4 million fine against Flutter Entertainment brand Betfair for allowing wagers on an Under 21 football league.
