Gaming geolocation company GeoComply reported that it received 8.1 million gambling geolocation transactions in the state of Massachusetts during the state's opening weekend of online sportsbetting, running from March 10th through the 12th.

The state launched its online sportsbetting market to much fanfare, with operators like Caesars, FanDuel, DraftKings, Barstool Sportsbook, and WynnBET all offering bets on professional and collegiate sports. The market was the fifth-busiest in the country during the weekend, being only beat out by New York, New Jersey, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.

GeoComply said that there were over 400,000 active accounts with the various books in the state. Reporting of numbers hasn't been made available yet, but it's likely March's numbers will be substantial, given the new market and the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament, known commonly as March Madness, which is kicking off.

Regarding the launch in Massachusetts, GeoComply SVP of Compliance Lindsay Slader said, "We are privileged to be licensed in Massachusetts and support operators and the MGC, as it builds a regulated online sports betting market with responsible gambling hard-boiled into its regulations. Massachusetts citizens will benefit from legal online sportsbooks dedicated to greater protection and an increased budget for responsible gambling programs.

"Today, one of the biggest challenges facing operators is onboarding genuine players and keeping out fraudsters. With the gold standard of geolocation in place and an experienced team of experts, we are uniquely positioned to lead the fight against fraud in all its forms."
