BetMGM Experiences Data Breach

This story was published more than 1 year ago.

American online betting group BetMGM announced this week that it experienced a data breach and that customer records were exposed.

The operator said that the break-in occurred in May and that certain patron information was accessed. The type of information that was visible to the hackers included "name, contact information (such as postal address, email address and telephone number), date of birth, hashed Social Security number, account identifiers (such as player ID and screen name) and information related to transactions with BetMGM."

Bet MGM said that they don't believe customer fund information was accessible in the breach, nor was password information.

News of the breach comes weeks after competitor DraftKings announced that it was also hacked, leading to $300,000 in theft from player accounts.

In a statement, BetMGM commented, noting: "BetMGM is coordinating with law enforcement and taking steps to further enhance its security. BetMGM recommends patrons remain alert for any suspicious activity or unsolicited communications regarding their personal information."

Company CEO Adam Greenblatt also issued comment, noting: "We are taking this matter very seriously and are working quickly to investigate it. The security of our platform and our patrons' data is a top priority for BetMGM. We regret any inconvenience this may cause."

Oh I don't even remember the Draftkings case with theft of players' funds due to hacking. That's bad. And unfortunately these things happen often, even my email address has been receiving very odd emails from sites I'm sure I never subscribed or even visited.

Yeah, these giant casinos and sportsbooks in the States are going to be prime targets, as they're sure to have hundreds of thousands, if not millions of names in their database. I hope they get everything battoned down. I don't need my $5 wins on football games being skimmed by some punk in his mom's basement!
