The first five days of legalized online sportsbetting in the state of Maryland generated 16.5 million geolocation transactions among 477,365 unique accounts according to geolocation specialist GeoComply.
The activity launched during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, and GeoComply recorded over 3.7 million transactions on Thanksgiving alone. The highest-bet events were the NFL, NBA, and World Cup.
GeoComply said that Maryland's performance outpaced nearby states such as Virginia, which recorded 8.5 million transactions over the same period, while Tennessee had 6.6 million transactions. There are currently seven different companies offering online sportsbetitng services in Maryland, including DraftKings, FanDuel, PointsBet, BetRivers, Barstool, Caesars, and BetMGM.
Regarding the performance, GeoComply Senior VP of Compliance Lindsay Slader said, "A strong start for the regulated market delivers on the promise of new revenues and consumer protections. Marylanders will continue to ditch illegal offshore sportsbooks for the security of legal, regulated operators that provide player safeguards and tax dollars for the state, just as lawmakers intended."
