Queensland AG Says Star "Unsuitable"

This week Queensland Attorney General Shannon Fentiman said that she has found gaming operator Star Entertainment Group to be unsuitable to hold a gaming licence within the Australian state.

The announcement comes after a months-long investigation into Star, which looked into a number of different institutional failings, including allegations that the company misled banks and regulators related to hosting players from China. The casino group was also found to have induced gambling by people linked to criminal groups, and one time they gave a player a $50,000 Rolex in an effort to persuade them to play. Social responsibility failings were also found to have been an issue with the casino group.

Star will be granted a chance to appeal the decision, and if the appeal isn't successful, the company could face disciplinary action, which could comprise of fines of up to AUD$100 million.

In a statement, Queensland Attorney General Shannon Fentiman said, "Considering the serious and concerning findings of the Gotterson Review and his advice regarding suitability, I have formed the view that the Star is unsuitable to hold a licence in Queensland.

"In accordance with the legislation, once a formal determination of unsuitability is made, the Star will be given the opportunity to respond to that finding through a show cause process.

"Following the show cause process, a range of remedial actions will be available to Government, including fines, suspending or cancelling licenses, and as recommended by Mr Gotterson, appointing a special manager, as has been done in Victoria."

A Star representative issued comment, noting: "The Star is currently considering the report and the matters raised by Mr Gotterson and will continue to work cooperatively with Office of Liquor and Gaming Regulation (OLGR)."
