Churchill Downs to Purchase Ellis Park

This story was published more than 1 year ago.

This week it was revealed that Churchill Downs Incorporated had reached a deal to purchase the Ellis Park horseracing track from Enchantment Holdings for $79 million.

The agreement will see Churchill Downs taking over full ownership of the track, which is located in Henderson, Kentucky. The site is over 100 years old and hosts a gaming facility complete with 300 racing machines. Churchill Downs will also obtain the rights to construct a track extension at the Towne Square Mall in Owensboro. That new facility is slated to have food and beverage options, viewing center for races, and over 600 gaming machines.

Commenting on the deal Churchill Downs Incorporated CEO Bill Carstanjen said, "Our team is committed to building a summer meet at the 'Pea Patch' that keeps more Kentucky-bred horses and Kentucky-based trainers' in their home state while attracting top horse racing talent from across the country to the Bluegrass State each July and August."

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear also commented, adding: "This is an exciting announcement for the horse racing. CDI has proven it has the experience, resources, and desire to reinvigorate Ellis Park into a premier racing destination and provide unmatched gaming entertainment.

"This investment will ensure our Kentucky horsemen and women have the best year-round racing circuit in the country and create jobs throughout the region and state. Churchill Downs is a great corporate citizen and an important part of Team Kentucky."

The deal is subject to approval from the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission, but should be completed without too many issues.
