Peru Votes to Legalize Online Gambling

This story was published more than 1 year ago.

Last week Peru's Congress voted to approve of both online gambling and sportsbetting, with the law establishing a regulating body to oversee the operations in the country.

Lawmakers debated the law, but eventually the measure passed through with a 91-0 margin. The Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism of Peru will oversee the activity, with a 12% tax rate on income minus maintenance costs will be collected. Operators will be able to offer bonuses, but bonuses cannot be exchanged for money. All sportsbetting platforms must have a warning that reads: "excessive online sports betting can cause pathological gambling."

Operators that violate rules can face warnings, monetary fines, license disqualifications, or even confiscation of assets.

The country's gambling laws come into effect 60 days after passage, and around that time we'll have a better timeframe as to when online gambling in the country will go live. Casino Listings News will update readers as more developments arise.
