Last week a Michigan judge sentenced three defendants after they pleaded guilty to running the illegal Spin City casino in Flint.
The casinos were reported by Flint Township police and were investigated by the Michigan Gaming Control Board. The casino was offering illegal slot machines, letting the public into the sites to put real money at risk for the unregulated machines. The case had dragged on since 2019.
Anthony Sutton of North Carolina got a felony gambling operations conviction and was sentenced to a year of probation, 100 hours of community service and $1,058 in costs. He also gave up 67 computers and gambling devices and $12,500 in cash at the time of the warrant investigation.
Kara Schilling pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of maintaining a gambling house for gain and got one year of probation, 50 hours of community service, and $1,058 in costs.
Marjorie Brown pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of attempting to maintain a gambling house for gain. She got six months of probation, 100 hours of community service, and $985 in costs.
The defendants got one day in jail with credit for time served.
Commenting on the case Michigan Gaming Control Board Executive Director Henry Williams said, "The Michigan Gaming Control Board appreciates the support from the Attorney General's office and police agencies across Michigan in helping to eliminate illegal gambling locations, which target low-income neighborhoods, lack player protections and can lead to other more serious crimes. These types of illegal gambling locations also deprive K-12 schools of tax funding, which the state charges on legal, regulated gambling."
