Norwegian Regulator Wants Time Limits for Betting

This story was published more than 1 year ago.

This week Norway's gaming regulator Lotteritilsynet called for time limits on gambling for the country's gambling monopoly Norsk Tipping moving forward, citing customer protection for its reasoning.

The regulator said that Lotteritilsynet is happy with the performance of Norsk Tipping in terms of keeping players from playing unlicensed sites, but also noted that the regulator's actions also have stemmed the players from playing at those illicit sites. The monopoly was also lauded for helping prevent gambling problems with a number of controls. With that said, Lotteritilsynet said that there's room for improvement and that players should be made to take a break after one hour of play.

The regulator also is asking for Norsk Tipping to record the number of games that its Kongkasino brand offers and to justify why the casino needs as many games as it offers. It also wants Kongkasino to lower the size of jackpots to avoid players betting excessively to try to hit that prize.

There hasn't been an indication as to when these changes will be implemented.

This one I just can't really understand. People that have gambling problems will bet money on regular games and chase losses, I don't see lowering jackpot amounts as something justifiable to minimise the risk of excessive gambling. And as for time limits, I think that most casinos offer this functionality and there's a 60min reality check when playing.
