Ontario Fines BetMGM and PointsBet

Today it was revealed that the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario has fined online operators BetMGM and PointsBet for violating advertising and promotion regulations within the province.

BetMGM Canada was fined $48,000 CAD for advertising promotions and inducements outside of their website as well as for having misleading promotional spots. The big offender here was a tweet that stated: "the more money you put in per bet, the higher your chance is of winning". The company also ran one of their Bellagio ads that offered a $10 bonus after punters bet $25.

PointsBet Canada was fined $30,000 CAD for two breaches of the advertising regulation, with posters being placed on trains with inducements to gamble on them.

Commenting on the fines AGCO CEO Tom Mungham said, "The AGCO holds all registered operators to high standards of responsible gambling, player protection and game integrity, and monitors their activities to ensure they are meeting their obligations under Ontario's Gaming Control Act and the Standards."

The operators have the ability to appeal the fines, but neither has indicated what they'll do as of press time. Ontario just launched a liberalized online market in April, with a number of operators able to offer casino and sportsbetting products to the province's players.
