Michigan Problem Gambling Helpline Calls Grew in 2021

This story was published more than 2 years ago.

2021 saw calls to the Michigan problem gambling hotline grow by nearly triple in 2021, as regulated sportsbetting and internet gambling spurred those seeking assistance.

The calls to the hotline totaled more than 4,400 in 2021. Players referred to gambling addiction treatment also grew by 45%, with 420 people referred last year.

Michigan regulated online gambling and sportsbetting in January of last year and quickly became one of the largest markets for regulated iGaming in the United States. With a population of 10 million, Michigan's market size is comparable to market leaders like New Jersey and Pennsylvania, meaning that there will also be higher revenues... and people who unfortunately experience gambling addiction.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services will be holding a virtual gambling disorder symposium on March 3rd and 4th, and it is free to attend. The symposium is titled "Gambling: The New Direction".

If you or someone you know is experiencing problem gambling behavior, we urge you to seek assistance. We have a Problem Gambling page that provides information here.
