Veikkaus Will Lay Off Some Staff

This story was published more than 2 years ago.

Gaming monopoly group Veikkaus announced that they're going to be downsizing, laying off between 125 and 195 staff.

The Finnish company will be closing around 15 gaming arcades due to changes made to the country's gambling laws. Veikkaus cited loss limits and mandatory ID for play as barriers that have affected its bottom line. Veikkaus is involved in redundancy negotiations to determine who'll be impacted.

Veikkaus initially indicated that they were negotiating contracts with 830 employees due to Covid-19 impacts. These layoffs, combined with the negotiations are expected to save Veikkaus about €15 million per year.

Regarding the changes Veikkaus' Senior VP for Channels and Sales Jari Heino said, "The reforms have been designed in such a way that those leaving the company will be offered support during the change. Basically, most members of Veikkaus' personnel that the negotiations concerned will be offered new positions within the company. For example, Casino Tampere, which will be opened in December, still needs dozens of gaming industry and customer service professionals.

"The sustainable casino of a new era of gaming will offer great facilities and jobs for many people. It is essential that we look ahead and work to make sure that Veikkaus retains its dynamicity today and tomorrow."

It's expected that the layoffs will take effect in January 2022.

We'll be updating this story as we learn more.

Although these things happen a lot in gaming, it's always sad to hear, as I've also had a first hand experience in being let go. And right after Christmas/New Year- definitely not a way how anyone wants to start the new year.
