North Dakota Gets Bill to Legalize Sportsbetting

This week lawmakers in North Dakota announced that they've introduced a bill that would legalize online sportsbetting and casino games.

The bill is known as House Bill 1234, which would see a five-member commission formed to put forth regulations related to sportsbetting and online casino gaming. The activities would generate tax revenues for state programs, which would benefit from an additional revenue stream.

"There's thousands of people in the state of North Dakota who are playing online poker," said Rep. Jim Kasper. "It's not regulated; it's not taxed." He cited a poker industry estimate that his 2005 legislation would have stacked up $500 million in annual taxes for the state."

Before the bill could be implemented, voters in the state would have to vote to legalize the activity in the 2022 mid-term elections.
