Portugal's punters spent a record number on online betting in the third quarter of 2020, as betting sites generated €84.2 million during the period.
The numbers were published by the Serviço de Regulação e Inspeção de Jogos (SRIJ), which serves as the country's gambling regulator. The numbers were up 55.6% from the same period last year, and 22.6% higher than the €68.7 million generated in the second quarter.
Sportsbetting revenues were €42.5 million, up 23.2% from last year and up major from the second quarter. This is largely attributed to sporting events coming back in the third quarter.
Games of chance generated €41.7 million, up 47.9% from last year, but down 12.9% from the quarter prior. This is being attributed to punters moving from casino games back to sports wagernig. Slots accounted for 70.3% of wagers, while roulette accounted for 13.8%, blackjack totaled 6.1%, and poker had 4.8% of bet totals.
There were 156,000 new accounts registered during the quarter, and 62,100 people opted to self-exclude from online betting. There are 24 active operators, up from 18 in 2019.

That is a very interesting information on the statistics. It would be interesting to see what improved the numbers to such extent. More casinos? World events?
