Betway Gets Warning From UK ASA

This story was published more than 4 years ago.

This week online betting group Betway was issued a warning by the UK Advertising Standards Authority after the operator aired a YouTube spot that had a footballer under the age of 25.

The video in question is a video that featured 20-year-old footballer Declan Rice, who plays for West Ham United. The spot did end up having a responsible gaming message as well as text that players have to be 18 years of age or older. Unfortunately, UK advertising standards dictate that "no-one who is, or seems to be, under 25 years old may be featured gambling or playing a significant role" within an ad.

Betway claims that the video wasn't an ad, but was instead editorial content, so the rule shouldn't apply to the content. The ASA feels differently though, and they've ruled that the ad may not air again in its current form, and that any future ads or content from them may not feature people under the age of 25.

Don't know why even Betway had to argue if that's an add or not if they got away with just a warning from the UKGC..unless if they've been planed more non ad "editorial contents" of this type...who knows...
