Unibet Fined $25,000 in Australia

This story was published more than 3 years ago.

Betting group Betchoice, which is trading as Unibet, has been fined $25,000 AUD by the Downing Centre Local Court in Sydney, Australia for offering promotions to gamblers within the state.

The company was fined over an ad that ran in February of this year that read, "Earn $50 CASH For Each Friend You Refer!". Another ad that drew the ire of the court ran in November and read: "Deposit $20, Bet with $100". New South Wales has a law that states that gambling companies cannot run a spot that induces potential players to open accounts, play, or participate more. Fines can range up to $110,000 AUD, so Unibet looks to have gotten off lightly.

Speaking about the fine NSW Liquor and Gaming Compliance Operations Director Sean Goodchild said, "Betting operators have an obligation to ensure that all advertising complies with NSW laws on gambling advertising. Inducements are known to increase the risk of gambling harm so any breaches are taken seriously."

No comment from Unibet or Betchoice was available as of press time.

No, if I bet on sport it is with Bet365 usually. But none of those guys will let us play at their casinos any more.

Hahaha, the fine is too small for one of the biggest online gambling companies 🙂
