Betway Under Fire from UKGC

This story was published more than 4 years ago.

Betting group Betway is under fire from the UK Gambling Commission after the group was found to have allowed a punter to gamble more than £370,000 in stolen funds.

The player who stole the funds is a 30 year old father of two that worked for The Cake Decorating Co beginning in 2015. He stole about £5,000 per month and gambled it all at Betway for about three years. After this, he began stealing larger amounts, with the highest being £30,000. Reportedly, Betway allowed the gambler to gamble the money and never questioned the source of the funds.

The UKGC became aware of the case and is conducting an investigation that's underway right now. When the results of the investigation come to light, it's likely that the company will be facing a heavy fine for allowing the punter to gamble large amounts for so long without any verification.

We'll follow the story and update readers as we learn more.

It always amazes me how ballsy an addict becomes to feed an addiction. They aren't small sums this fellow stole. And how on earth is this not being picked up on the accounting side??!!

Apparently The Cake Decorating Company is the "UK's largest retailer of cake decorating supplies, stocking the basics from sugarpaste, cake boxes and boards to the latest in innovative products". So probably some significant sums coming in and out....I guess they didn't notice £5K a month but £30K must have set off the alarm bells!

Please, please, please get help before it ever comes to this people!

To be honest, what also amazes me is how sometimes regular players that don't bet that much get problems with verifying proof of income while here we're talking about hundreds of thousands. Ridiculous.

Apparently being a parent doesn't automatically make you an honest man..

I could understand the gambling addiction could cause that...and even sympathize to the people in such state but there's maybe other point of view to this as well...could that be just a huge excuse for stealing...and where's the guarantees that man wouldn't still take all those money even if has not been a gambling addict!?! Just a thought...
