Philippines President Now Wants Gambling Expansion

This story was published more than 4 years ago.

This week Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte has voiced his support for expanding gambling in the country, this despite previous attempts to stop the activity taking place.

The announcement came during Duterte's State of the Nation address, where he pointed out that state gaming agency PAGCOR had contributed a record set of revenues for the state. He then told the chairwoman of PAGCOR to "push [or 'promote'] more gambling, ma'am."

Duterte has previously called for a moratorium for any new land casino licenses being issued, and he's been against online betting as well.

PAGCOR officials announced that they're going to be talking to Duterte at the earliest possible time for clarification, but it looks like gambling expansion may be once again growing in the Asian country.

I've been just wondering how this guy doing..didn't heard of him for a while 😉 and obviously he's in a pro-gambling mood now...money speaks man 🤑 😀

And you don't have to ever been a corrupt politician to realize that.

It is quite strange. He might have said it without thinking much on it.
Maybe, there are some Chinese funds wanting to open a new casino there.

That's not how businesses work. If a government tries to stop a business from operating in a country, then later changes its mind and invites the business to come in or expand, why should this business come and invest money in the country not knowing when and if the government would change its mind again?

I wish Duterte's luck in getting the gambling industry to invest more money in his country. But he seems to face much bigger issues there with his South China Sea's dispute where he inexplicably asked the US to go to war with China over the disputed.claims. https://www.newsweek.com/lets-bomb-everything-philippines-president-rodr...

This is coming from a guy who has boasted of personally shooting someone who bullied him at school, killing several other people, and of course notorious for encouraging execution squads to go around shooting people suspected of being petty criminals. Plus loads of other unsavoury stuff. He makes Donald Trump look like a saint. Not exactly the kind of guy a business would look towards for reliability, consistency and long term planning.

Yep. No one would have known that Trump was an egocentric ignoramus if he had just kept his mouth shut during his presidency. Oh well...

On a second thought, more like an imagination...

Maybe, he was offered to grant a casino license to a big drug syndicate, in return, the syndicate would give up the drug business and other evil things, etc. 🙂

Or, he just want to open a casino for his family business 😀
