Woman Jailed for Leaving Child in Car to Gamble

This story was published more than 6 years ago.

This week an Oklahoma woman was jailed for 30 days for leaving her baby inside of her car while she went inside and gambled at a casino.

Jamie Benson was given a sentence of 30 days in jail with a suspended sentence of 364 days in jail as well as three years of probation for child neglect and endangerment. She had left her child inside of her car so that she could go inside and gamble. She had her baby in the seat of a running and unlocked car. She was found gambling at a machine in the Dottie's Casino, having gambled for about an hour.

As part of her sentence Benson will have to take parenting classes within the first six months of her sentence, while also avoiding drinking, drugs, and gambling during the period of the probation.

It's pretty apparent that Ms. Benson may have a gambling problem. We urge all players who exhibit risky behavior or feelings of addiction to reach out for help. We have a section that provides resources for those experiencing addiction, and it can be found here.

I wonder how old the child is but if it's really a baby than the sentence is even too light, in any case that's really an irresponsible attitude, one thing is the screw up your own life but...that of your own kid...
I understand we should also feel sorry for this kind of people but that's just....One thing is for sure, this woman won't get mother of the year reward.

This is yet another case that proves that while you might need a license to drive a car or scuba dive, anyone can have kids.

That said, I wonder whether jailing someone for neglecting their child is a good result for the child seeing as the mother will now be locked up away from her child for a month.

Yeah, good point Ed, but it would be hard to think of any other adequate punishment, maybe some hours of community service would be better but it had to be something for sure.

Oh, this is a sad news, but the baby escaped the worst situation.
About an hour alone in the car is really dangerous...
