Vietnamese Woman Jailed for Gambling Ring

This story was published more than 3 years ago.

This week a 50 year old Vietnamese woman running an illegal gambling ring out of Phnom Penh was given a one year prison sentence for her crimes.

Tan Phany was given the sentence by Judge Theam Chanpiseth, who said that the defendant was arrested on November 20th for running a betting den. Phany was selling lottery tickets to customers, and the raid went down while she was in the process of selling tickets to customers.

Speaking about the sentencing Judge Chanpiseth said, "The court decided to sentence her to a year in prison. She was arrested red-handed while she was selling tickets to her gamblers."

Gambling is illegal in Vietnam, with the country working to crack down on illegal betting, albeit to limited success.

I guess you can't plead not guilty if you was caught in action like that.
I don't know if the sentence could be determined as hard according local walls but it looks quite tough penalty to me, but I guess she knew the risks so it is what it is.

It's a risk that must be accepted like other sellers who are caught. I think vietnam has caught many sellers of illegal ticket lottery before it
