This week it was revealed that 15 people in Singapore were caught in a raid and charged with illegal gambling activities.
The suspects ranged in age from 30 to 51 and were comprised of 14 men and one woman. The group was found playing Mah Jong in an apartment for money, with $2,302 in cash having been involved in the activity when the raid occurred. The operation was carried out by the Bedok Police Division and Immigration & Checkpoints Authority and is part of ongoing operations to stop illegal gambling in the area.
The defendants in the case are facing fines of up to $5,000 and 6 months in jail if convicted. Those running a gambling house face jail terms of up to three years in jail and fines of up to $50,000.
Speaking about the bust Geylang Neighborhood Superintendent of Police Ben Kwok said, "This joint operation led by Police is an ongoing enforcement effort to clamp down on such illicit activities in Geylang. We will continue to work closely with enforcement counterparts to eradicate criminal activities. Offenders will be dealt with in accordance to the law."
