Late last night a deranged gunman opened fire into a concert in Las Vegas, killing at least 50 people and wounding more than 400.
The shooter has been identified as Stephen Paddock, a 64 year old man whose motives are not immediately known. He was situated in a room on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel and casino and opened fire into a country music concert that was taking place across the street. Paddock fired several volleys of automatic gunfire into the crowd as star Jason Aldean was wrapping up his set, concluding a three-day music festival.
Witnesses claim the gunshots sounded like firecrackers, only they didn't stop. Paddock fired into the crowd for an estimated 4 minutes, 30 seconds before turning the gun on himself.
Concert attendees fled the scene, and chaos ensued around the Las Vegas Strip. For a time there was false information that more than one shooter was present and that gunshots were occurring at other resorts. Ambulances and law enforcement flooded the scene and the Strip was shut down for several hours.
The incident is the largest mass-shooting event in American history.
