UK Online Gambling Numbers Up

Annual gambling statistics were released by the UK Gambling Commission this week, revealing that 2016 saw online wagers were up 32% from the year prior.

The annual report noted that online betting in the country reached £4.5 billion last year, making up 32% of the UK's total Gross Gaming Yield. Casino games had £2.4 billion in GGY, mostly comprised of slots, which totaled £1.6 billion. The industry as a whole reached £13.8 billion, which was up 2.9% from the year prior. Land based betting, fixed odds terminals, and online gaming all saw growth, with the only verticals not growing were lottery and bingo.

There were fears that online betting would suffer in the UK thanks to a point of consumption tax that was placed on operators offering their services in the country. Thus far it appears that such concerns have not come to fruition, although a long-term analysis will be needed to accurately gauge its full impact.
