Ladbrokes Pulls In-Play Betting System in Australia

This story was published more than 8 years ago.

UK betting firm Ladbrokes has pulled their QuickCall product in Australia, which allows punters to place bets over the internet using their computer microphone after it was revealed that several betting firms were being investigated for illegal wagering.

Australia has a law that only allows for in-play bets to be placed via telephone, but several online betting sites such as Ladbrokes, William Hill, and Bet365 have gotten around this by requiring players have their microphone on when they place those wagers.

The move comes after the Australian Communications and Media Authority told the firms that the microphone option does not make the practice legal. It also appears that Australia's media outlets are worried about the legalities of the situation, with the channels saying they will not air spots featuring the in-call promotion until the situation is resolved.
