In an email to affiliates this week online betting site 888 has announced that they are withdrawing from Portugal's betting market with immediate effect.
Details on 888's reasons for leaving are currently unknown, but it is safe to assume that the group wants to preserve their chances of obtaining a betting license in the Western European country, and the pullout will keep them in the good graces of the country's gaming regulator.
The full email to affiliates read:
We are writing to inform you that due to recent regulation changes in Portugal, we have decided to terminate the offering of our services to players from Portugal. We have therefore stopped all marketing activity in Portugal as of today, and ask you to discontinue targeting and cease all marketing activities towards players in Portugal with immediate effect.
We apologize for any inconvenience.
