Internet poker site PokerStars has announced that they have launched a sportsbook in the United Kingdom, allowing poker players the opportunity to bet on various sports directly through their poker client.
The sportsbook is available for bets through the PokerStars 7 client, and can also be accessed through the Android and iOS platforms. The software currently is allowing bets in the following sports: football, tennis, basketball, ice hockey, rugby union, handball, and volleyball.
Commenting on the launch Amaya CEO David Baazov said, "Amaya intends to acquire new customers and gain online gaming market share through the continued expansion of the B2C business in other verticals, including sports betting, casino, social gaming, and daily fantasy sports, which we expect will supplement our current growth plans for our core poker business."
The addition of a sportsbook is the latest diversification for PokerStars since it was acquired by Amaya Gaming last year. The company has previously introduced casino games from developers such as Net Entertainment to offer something a bit new to customers who have only been able to play poker through the firm over the past several years.
