Lithuania to Allow Online Gambling

Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaitė has signed amendments to the country's gambling law this week, ensuring that the country will regulate online gambling.

While signing the bill President Grybauskaitė noted that only his country and the Netherlands are the only countries in the European Union who do not regulate online betting, and that the move was necessary to halt unregulated sites from offering their services to punters.

The amendments will stipulate that online operators in Lithuania must be licensed and will be supervised by the country's Gaming Control Authority. Offshore and unlicensed sites will not be permitted to operate in-country, and promoting those sites will also be illegal.

Before the changes are enacted, the European Commission will need to approve the measure in order to confirm that the laws are in accordance with European Union law.
