California Supreme Court Rules Against Sweepstakes Cafes

This story was published more than 5 years ago.

Last week the California Supreme Court ruled against the operators of internet sweepstakes cafes that offer games of chance, closing the loophole that the shops used to stay in business.

The ruling will keep the state of California from offering the games, opening up prosecution for those who continue operating the sites. The city of San Francisco has been fighting the cafes for years, saying that the sites bring criminal elements alongside them.

It is not known if the shops will be given a timeline to shut down or if they have been ordered to shut down immediately.

Casino Listings will update this story as more developments arise.
