A British man was sentenced to 27 months in prison after he was found guilty of stealing from his mother to gamble online.
David Rylance stole £52,000 from his mother Margaret, who suffers from Alzheimers. The woman tried to alert people to her missing money, but the claims were written off to her dementia and not followed up on. The defendant ended up draining her mother's account.
Rylance used the stolen money to gamble online, take vacations, and fund his day to day living expenses.
Speaking to the defendant at his trial Newcastle Crown Court Judge Penny Moreland said, “Your mother had anxieties in the last years of her life that her money was going missing, but, because of her illness, that was not taken seriously."
