The UK horse racing event Cheltenham Festival had a huge turnout in terms of wagering, as the event yielded more than 25,000,000 bets during its time.
The numbers are reported by OpenBet, who says that the race's number provided a huge bump to normal betting transactions, making 17% of all wagers placed during the weekend. Mobile betting was huge this year, as 63% of bets placed during the event being done via smartphones and tablets. OpenBet claims that the Cheltenham Festival is their second busiest wagering event of the year, following only the Grand National event.
Commenting on the event OpenBet CEO Jeremy Thompson-Hill said, “The Cheltenham Festival is a critical week in the calendar for OpenBet and our customers. We are proud of our performance and reliability throughout such a significant and demanding event. The fact that a global retail giant like Amazon averaged 3,840 orders per minute[i] on Black Friday shows the sheer scale of our sports betting and account platform. The mobile statistics underline the ongoing shift in player behaviour."
