Police in the Netherlands have announced that they have arrested five men that they accuse of running an illegal sports betting ring.
Three of the suspects resided in The Hague, while the other two were from elsewhere in the country. The arrests were part of a six country match-fixing investigation, and also saw raids occurring in Austria, Curacao, Germany, and the UK. Police in the Dutch raid also seized Rolexes, cars, and €100,000 in cash.
A police statement on the matter read: “Three men are suspected of being part of a criminal group in the Netherlands that runs a professional large-scale illegal gambling racket. The Public Prosecutor’s office views gambling without permission in a serious light,” the statement said. “It undermines the financial system and government policy regarding gambling. There is no control over profits... or attempts to manipulate games."
