888 Set to Leave the Netherlands

This story was published more than 9 years ago.

Internet betting firm 888 is gearing up to leave the Netherlands as the country prepares to regulate and liberalize its online gambling market next year.

The indication that 888 are pulling out of the Dutch market came in an advisory to affiliates on 888's website, which read: "Pursuant to recent developments in The Netherlands," it is instructing that affiliates must, with immediate effect, "discontinue and in future refrain from any marketing activities whatsoever that are directed at the Dutch market and which are related to either Dutch or international large-scale sporting events."

The Netherlands are looking to expand online betting in their market, but are threatening that unauthorized operators can be blacklisted and even face criminal prosecution. This has caused some large operators to back out in the hopes of obtaining a license in the future.
