A 40 year old Melbourne man was sentenced to seven years in jail by an Australian judge this week after he stole A$2.148 million from his employer in order to gamble.
Jason George McGregor was given the stiff sentence after he plead guilty to six counts of obtaining property by deception between April 2008 and 2013. The defendant stole the large sum of funds in 365 different transactions, which he then used to gamble at land casinos as well as online.
Speaking to the defendant during sentencing Judge Christopher Ryan said, "You knowingly exploited the accounting systems, safe in the knowledge you were the only one person in charge of this system."
McGregor ran into issues when he began betting more than he could afford to lose and began stealing from his employer. He then escalated the amount taken in order to pay off his debt in order to repay the firm, but was never able to catch up, as he continued to dig a bigger hole for himself.
McGregor will have to spend at least four years in jail before he can be paroled.
