888Poker has cancelled its sponsorship contract with Luis Suarez after he bit an opponent during the Uruguay/Italy World Cup match last week.
The announcement was made by 888Poker in a statement, which read: "888poker signed Luis Suarez following a fantastic season for which his achievements were widely recognized."
"Regrettably, following his actions during Uruguay’s World Cup match against Italy on Tuesday, 888poker has decided to terminate its relationship with Luis Suarez with immediate effect."
The decision by the Gibraltar licensed betting operator is the latest in a long line of backlash against the Liverpool striker, who has a long history of biting opponents in competitive matches. FIFA has suspended Suarez for 9 games and issued him a £66,000 fine for his actions.
Sporting goods manufacturer Adidas is also reconsidering its relationship with Suarez, noting: “Adidas certainly does not condone Luis Suarez's recent behavior and we will again be reminding him of the high standards we expect from our players. We have no plan to use Suarez for any additional marketing activities during the 2014 FIFA World Cup"
“We will discuss all aspects of our future partnership directly with Suarez and his team following the World Cup.”
Last week Casino Listings reported on how 167 players throughout the world actually bet on Suarez biting an opponent during the World Cup, and were paid handsomely when the striker chomped the shoulder of Giorgio Chiellini.
