An online poll of 500 Pennsylvanian adults revealed that a vast majority of the state's residents do not want to see online betting criminalized, an opinion that comes in contrast to a state politician who plans to introduce a bill doing just that.
The survey came after Pennsylvania State Representative Mario Scavello said that he plans to introduce a bill that would make it a crime for Pennsylvanians to gamble online. Those who do could face a misdemeanor charge that could land punters a stiff fine or jail time.
The poll was orchestrated by the poker information site Online Poker Report, who asked a single question that read: "PA State Rep. Mario Scavello wants to make playing online poker a crime punishable by jail time. Do you support or oppose his position?"
Respondents overwhelmingly said "No" by an 82.2%-17.8% margin.
It will be interesting to see if further polls back up the results of this one, and whether or not Rep. Scavello will change his tune if the numbers go against his actions.
