Gaming industry magnate Sheldon Adelson is gearing up to stage a massive fight against online gambling, this according to a report in the Washington Post.
The effort will reportedly involve the hiring of lobbyists and public relations experts as well as the foundation of a group named the "Coalition to Stop Internet Gambling".
Adelson is reportedly dedicated to seeing internet gambling made illegal, claiming that the act promotes problem and underage gambling. One source close to Adelson told the newspaper, "Advisers to Adelson say he is intensely focused on the coming battle and talks about it every day with his staff. He has about two dozen experts working nearly full time on the issue."
Adelson's political advisor Andy Abboud also commented, saying: “In my 15 years of working with him, I don’t think I have ever seen him this passionate about any issue."
The billionaire will likely face significant opposition from other casinos as well as lobbyists, who are in favor of seeing federal legalization of online gambling.
Speaking on the issue, Poker Players Alliance Executive Director John Pappas said, “We don’t make a habit of picking fights with billionaires. But in this case, I think we’ll win, because millions of Americans who want to play online will oppose this legislation, along with dozens and dozens of states that want the freedom to authorize any kind of gaming they see fit.”
This is likely to be a long and very in-depth story, which Casino Listings will keep on top of. We will be publishing any relevant details as they become available.
