The debt collector of a major online sportsbetting ring has been sentenced to 33 months in a federal prison by a federal court.
Joseph Borea of Stamford, Connecticut was handed the stiff sentence by a court for his role in collecting debts for the illegal ring. He had plead guilty to one count of conspiring to violate racketeering law back in August.
Borea collected debts for the ring, which was tied to the Gambino crime family based in New York. It is thought that the ring brought in more than $1.7 million during its time in operation.
The case saw 18 people charged with various crimes in connection with the ring, with sentences varying depending on the roles played in its operation. Thus far, the defendants have forfeited roughly $1.4 million in cash and property.
